How to Use Interlibrary Loan: Home

This guide will help you determine whether Interlibrary Loan is the right choice as well as create an Interlibrary Loan request.

Interlibrary Loan

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is the system used when one library requests an item from another library on behalf of one of their patrons.

What is Interlibrary Loan (ILL)?

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is the system used when one library requests an item from another library on behalf of one of their patrons.

What does that mean for you?

When you are researching your topic and you come across a resource that you think would be helpful but you can't find it through your library then ILL becomes an option. Once you decide to use ILL, you can submit your request. Then our staff (Library A) try to find another library (Library B) that both has the item you are looking for and is willing to lend it.

This process takes time so be sure to consider how soon you would need your item before requesting it.

When should you use ILL?

First: Check to make sure your library doesn't already have it.

Second: Consider whether it is a resource worth waiting for. Do you really need it or is it something that may or may not be helpful?

Last: If it is worth the wait and your library does not have it, submit a request.

What can you request through ILL?

You can request a variety of items through ILL, including books, articles, chapters, videos, etc. Just be sure you have the resources to access the media that you request. For example, make sure you have access to a VHS player before requesting a VHS.

How Long Before I Have My Item?

Articles and electronic requests typically take anywhere from 24 hours to 1 week depending on the difficulty locating a copy.

Books and physical items typically take 2-4 weeks depending on the difficulty locating a copy.
